Vintages release, February 28, 2009

I was out of Canada when the advance tasting of this release was held. I apologize for being unable to provide my usual reviews.

I have tasted the following from this release:
**** drink now
Graffigna ‘Centenario’ Malbec 2006
San Juan, Argentina $15.95 (93724)
This stands out above the gathering crowd of malbecs from Argentina. It has all the fruit-forward character, richness and smooth texture you expect, but there’s some nice complexity to the flavours, some structure in the body, and an astringent follow-through. It’s a very good choice for well-seasoned red meats.

**** drink or cellar
Sileni ‘Cellar Selection’ Pinot Noir 2007
Hawkes Bay, New Zealand $15.00 (694901)
It’s not overly complex, but it’s a very, very attractive pinot noir at an excellent price. Look for nicely pitched vibrant fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and easy-going tannins here, with a very good balance of all the components. Drinking now and over the next three-four years, it’s a great choice for grilled or roasted lamb and for hearty pasta.

**** drink or cellar
Tudernum Merlot 2006
IGT Umbria, Italy $15.95 (101253)
This 100% merlot from the Umbria region delivers ripe flavours that are concentrated and well-defined, very good structure, and a nice seam of acidity that contributes to the refreshing texture. Dry, medium-bodied and well-balanced, it’s a natural for a braised lamb shank.
