I had a lot of response to a recent column on wine labels, and I'll come back to some of the issues in future columns. She writes, "You didn't say anything about the back labels, which often have information about what the wine is like. Are they useful?" |

So here we are, Valentine's Day, and much of the wine press is telling you which wines go well with chocolate. Let me be a bit heretical: don't bother trying to match your chocolate with wine. With few exceptions, it's just a bad idea. |

The next Vintages release on Saturday offers some very good, well-priced wines. Although Vintages does carry many expensive wines, it also has many at more popular prices. Here are some of the wines appearing this weekend that I think are well worth considering. |

A heads-up today on some wines I've tasted recently that I think are well worth a look. It's a pretty mixed bag in terms of style and availability: Most are available in the LCBO, but two can be purchased directly from Ontario wineries. |

Last May, I spent three or four weeks tasting through nearly all the wines on the LCBO's General List and in the Vintages "Essentials" category: close to 1,500 wines in all. My colleague, Vic Harradine, and I gathered the wines (they took over my house), grouped them by country and variety or style, and tasted and discussed each one. Why? Quite often I get inquiries from people who want to start a wine cellar. Sometimes they want to know about the construction side of things, sometimes it's more about the wines. The basic question here is how to know which wines to put in a cellar and for how long. |

I've eaten out a lot recently, and it's given me a concentrated look at wine service in a range of Ottawa restaurants. As you'd expect, it's a mixed bag, and I wonder how many of my experiences are typical. |

Wine producers in Prince Edward County did an interesting thing a couple of weeks ago: they opened a wine store. How could they do that, in a province where private wine stores (apart from the restricted number of stores owned by major producers) are not permitted? Well, this was a store with a difference: customers could taste a range of county wines, and they could look at the bottles. But they couldn't buy any. |

A few weeks ago I wrote about wine myths, including the beliefs that wine is mysterious and that consumers have gone off chardonnay. I asked readers to send me any other myths they'd noticed in circulation, and I had a good response. So, two more today. |
